Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Chimney Sweeping, Chimney Inspection, and Creosote Removal
As the fall and colder weather approaches, it is important to consider the condition of the chimneys in your home, so that you can light a fire in your fireplace without any risk to the safety of your family or your home. Home safety experts recommend a chimney sweep and an inspection of your chimney's condition every year, before the heating season starts.

Chimney Sweeping and Creosote Removal
Chimney sweeps are important for several reasons. For one, it will ensure that your chimney is in operating order and that nothing will happen to your home. If there is an obstruction within a chimney that has happened during the non-heating season, it will prevent a chimney's ability to perform its function properly, i.e. to remove gases, created during burning, from your home. Instead, gases will return to your home and present serious health hazards for your family members. Additionally, sweeping the chimney removes creosote from the flue lining surface. Creosote is similar to tar and develops when wood burns. It will attach to the inner surface of a chimney and after certain time, i.e. after enough of it has built up, it will create a high fire hazard, because it is very flammable.

Besides doing this necessary maintenance, it is also important to call an inspector to inspect your chimney and to verify its condition. The inspector will have a look at the chimney and fireplace to discover any damage or parts that are not functioning properly. Thus, an inspector protects your family and your home from fire hazards because he has the necessary expertise to discover any underlying problems that someone else, like an untrained individual, might not detect.

The National Fire Protection Association has developed guidelines for inspections that have to be followed by all chimney inspectors. These guidelines outline 3 inspection levels, designed in accordance to particular chimney conditions and needs.

Chimney Inspection Levels
Level 1 is the most basic and the simplest. If there were no construction changes in your heating system, and you plan to keep on heating as you did the last year, you will probably get the Level 1 inspection. In this case, the inspector checks out all of the "readily available" elements of chimney to determine if they are of proper function and structure.

A second level inspection is more detailed and will be performed when a homeowner has changed the type of the fuel he will use; when there has been construction change to flue lining; when there are new owners in the house, or if there was a fire in the house during the previous period. This inspection includes all the basic elements of the Level 1 inspection, but the inspector will also check out elements of the chimney accessible throughout the house, such as in a basement, attic, or the floors in between.

A third level inspection is performed when either of previously described inspections suggests that there is a hidden hazard somewhere in the chimney structure. This inspection will involve certain demolition in order to fully inspect the suspected hazardous part of the chimney.
