Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

How to extend your flue if you have smoke problems
The main purpose of the flue is to transfer the smoke from your chimney to your outer environment. There are many things which could go wrong in transferring the smoke from the house to the outside environment. One of the major reason for the smoke problem is the improper design of the flue or improper size of the flue. The effect of improper size of flue could make lot of smoke problems. The key to find whether the size of your flue is the real culprit is by taking the measurement of the flue and height of the flue from the roof and verifying it with the standard. After taking the measurement, make sure that your flue is at least 3 feet above your roof and cross sectional area of the flue is at least one-tenth of the cross sectional area of entire firebox. If you found any deviation in your actual measurement with the standard, then you should consider extending your flue. However, if you found that flue is not behind your smoking problems, consider calling an expert. If your flue's size is the problem, you can extend your flue by yourself by following the below instructions.
  • Remove the existing chimney crown
Chimney crown encloses the flue and is usually made up of concrete steel. If your crown is made up of mortar, you may remove it by yourself. If it is made up of concrete steel, please do call a professional because you may destroy the flue line and you need lot tools to remove concrete steel. Mortar can be removed by the chisel and hammer.
  • Extend the flue line
Make sure to measure the size of flue before purchasing extension flue as size of them need to be matched. Before inserting them into the old flue line, clean all the debris with the scrub brush. Make sure to not leave even tiny debris over the flue line and attach a new flue line with the strong adhesive over the old one.
  • Build bricks around the flue line extension
As the soon as the flue line is attached firmly to the old one, place bricks around the flue line extension and apply mortar to them.
  • Rebuild the chimney crown
It is easy to construct a concrete chimney crown by yourself. Form the frame by attaching 2*6 board and 1*6 board. Fill concrete in between the form. Concrete can be formed by adding 1 part of Portland cement with two parts of 2 parts of sand and 3 parts of gravel with water not exceeding 60% of the volume of the cement. Oil should be added between the frame and the concrete to facilitate its removal.
  • Give some time and clean the debris
Give a day time for the concrete and mortar to settle. Remove the frame from the concrete crown. Add water to the bricks around the flue extension to harden it and finally clean all the debris around the bricks and the concrete chimney crown.
