Chimney Sweep Useful Tip:

Cleaning Wood Burning Fireplace
Your wood burning fireplace can be thoroughly cleaned when you discover the right steps to take. You can actually hire an expert cleaner to do the job if you've got the cash to spend. However, you can save money and do the cleaning yourself. Here are simple DIY tips that can help you clean the wood burning fireplace:

Assemble all the necessary cleaning tools
Before you start the cleaning process, you need to gather all the necessary tools required. Here's the check list of what you need:

  • Drop cloth or old newspapers to protect the floor
  • Rags or towels to clean and shine the glass
  • Rubber gloves for your hands
  • Brush
  • Ash shovel for clearing ashes
  • Metal ash container
  • Scrapper or knife for scrapping heavy creosote or soot
  • Dust mask for your protection
  • Ash vacuum
  • Screwdriver for disconnecting stove pipes
After gathering the tools, you can start the cleaning process by taking the following steps:
  • Make sure the wood burning fireplace is completely cool before you start the cleaning process. You must wait for some hours for the embers to go out completely.
  • Lay the old newspapers or drop cloth all around the fireplace in order to protect the floor.
  • Start scooping the ash with the ash shovel. Use the ash container to pack the ashes as they come out.
  • Try removing firebricks that may cause obstructions when you start cleaning the stove pipe. You can use your screwdriver to unscrew the pipe in order to reach everywhere.
  • You can climb on top of the roof to clean the stove pipe. To avoid the risk of climbing, you can use a brush attached to a long stick to clean the pipes instead of climbing the roof.
  • Use the scrapper or knife to scrap off creosote and soot that build up inside the pipe.
  • Replace the stove pipe by tightening them up with the screw after cleaning.
  • Move back to the firebox on ground and try scooping out the creosote that may have dropped while you were cleaning the stove pipe.
  • Replace the firebricks after cleaning up the area.
  • Use the vacuum to clean the interior section of the firebox. You can use the brush as well to clear ashes inside the box.
  • Make sure you pack the ashes or creosote that drop on the protected floor at the end.
  • Make sure you clean up the glass in front of your stove if your fireplace has that. Use a good cleaning solution to do so.
  • Make sure you clean the outside of the stove after dealing with the inside. You can use water and detergent to do the cleaning.
Finally, make sure you clean up the entire surroundings at the end. Try as much as possible to dispose soot and creosote according to the local laws governing your location.
